Broken Add-in?

I've seen a couple of posts regarding the installation failure of the Office Live add-in. From what I've seen it appears that the add-in is (put plainly) broken.

I've tried the add-in on 2 different systems with wdely varied results. On the Windows XP system with Office 2003 the add-in installed and worked as expected with no issues at all. On the Vista system with Office 2007 the add-in refuses to install at all. I've tried an number of different scenarios:

1. Straight download and install of add-in on existing systen. Failure.

2. Complete reinstall of Office 2007 followed by full Windows updating and patching then add-in install. Failure.

3 Complete reinstall of Office 2007 and Office 2007 SP1 update followed by Add-in install. Failure

4 Complete reinstall of Office 2007 follwed by Add-in install (before any updating and patching. Failure.

Can I safely assume that the add-in was just poorly built and rushed out to the public before ot was ever REALLY tested? With as hard as MS is pushing Vista and Office 2007 I find it hard to believe that the add-in is broken this badly.

Re: Broken Add-in?

Montythemooch,

You’re right; others have started reporting this but the development team will have to chime in to verify the problem.  As for me I have Vista, and Office 2007 running on four of our computers with the install working fine, but these were installed before, so I am not sure if there is a new problem. As a last resort; have you tried resetting your browser settings?

To reset your browser and reinstall Office Live add-ins go to Tools; Internet Options; the Advanced tab and click on the “Reset… option, in Internet Explorer.  After you do this, close your browser and reopen it and it should allow you to reinstall the updates right from your Office Live Workspaces. You will then need to restart your system. I only suggest this as a last resort because it will also reset all other plug-ins you have installed. Please let me know if this helps.

Before posting this I tried it myself on one of our computers and it worked. Hopefully it will work for you as well.

Re: Broken Add-in?

Since I'm a Firefox user it didn't really hurt to nuke the IE settings. Unfortunately it had no affect on the ability of my system to install the addin. I'm still getting an error like this:

Update Office 2007 update (KB 941637) has failed to install.

The following updates were not installed:
- Windows Live Sign-in Assistant

The following updates failed to install:
- Office 2007 update (KB 941637)

See the setup log file located at 'C:\Users\Eric\AppData\Local\Temp\VSDA572.tmp\install.log' for more information.

This is especially annoying since KB941637 is already installed. The add-in just doesn't correctly identify it.

SUCCESS!!!!!!

As I had mentioned previously I was continuously receiving the following error whe attempting to intall the add-in.

This was disconcerting as I already had  KB941637 installed. It seems that the add-in installer has some issues with recognition of it. I had read in some other post about some sort of issues with idenification between the version of Office and SP1 confising the issues. It was in that same post that I had read about extracting teh contents of the KB941637 installer into a separate directory. When trying to refresh or reinstall KB941637 I would get errors indicating that the incorrect version of Office was installed.

I decided to try out the extraction so I went to the installer on the command line level and typed "c:\office-kb941637-fullfile-x86-glb /extract" . This brought up a dialog asking where to extract the files to. Once selected the file "mso.msp" was extracted. Double clicking on mso.msp allowed me to run the KB941637 installer without receiving the initial error and refreshed the install of the KB. Once that was done the add-in installer saw the refreshed KB and installed without issue.

I'm now able to use the add-in from my MS Office programs.

Re: SUCCESS!!!!!!

That’s great news Eric (montythemooch), so is it still working well?  It has been a little over a week and I am terribly sorry that I did not get back to you on this right after your post before this one, but I am so glad you figure it out.  According to the time stamps it looks like it took you much of the day and boy can I relate to that. Anyway, I am just glad you are up and running, and curious if things are still working well and if that was in fact the for sure fix you mentioned.

Re: SUCCESS!!!!!!

Since my original reply appears to not have gone through we'll try this again. :)

Actually, since getting the add-in sucessfully installed I have barely made use of it. Mainly due to the fact that what I had originally hoped to do is not currently possible. I was hoping to be able to use the add-in with OneNote, but in it's current incarnation the add-in doesn't seem to be much more than a basic access portal to an online file folder.I'm sure that as it continues to develop it will evolve into more of a true "Live Office" portal where you can use any Office format across it, but for the moment it's just not there.

Re: SUCCESS!!!!!!

I just attempted this, but the @#$@#s at microsoft have now password-protected the executable so you can't /extract it. Anybody got the original?

I had to request mine thru the MS hotfix path, and got an e-mail directing me to

http://hotfixv4.microsoft.com/2007%20Microsoft%20Office%20System/sp2/officekb941637fullfilex86glb/12.0000.6301.5000/free/338720_intl_i386_zip.exe

 Thanks for any help.

Re: SUCCESS!!!!!!

You're in luck. It appears I still have the unzipped file. PM me with you email address and I'll zip it (no passworded) :o) and send I'll set up a share for you to grab it. It's about 13MB in size.

Re: SUCCESS!!!!!!

Hi,

the password to unzip the hotfix is at the end of the email you got from hotfix@microsoft.com. I hope this will help you.

Re: SUCCESS!!!!!!

That's right. I forgot about that. Nice catch. I remember that you can't just cut and paste the password though (at least I couldn't). It wouldn't accept it until I manually typed it in. Then it unzipped.
