author cannot edit his own work on another computer

I cannot edit or "open with original program" ie: excel. I'm not even given the option, when I sign in and try to open one of my workspace docs.  I tried doing same with my PC and though editing was not an option to start, once I agreed to run active X controls, my editing option appeared.  On my laptop I'm not even asked to run active x controls.  I can view my docs but can't edit them.   Any ideas appreciated.

thank you

Re: author cannot edit his own work on another computer

One regular issue we've run into for editing is persistent cookies.

If on the other computer, you or someone else logged into something with a Windows Live ID, but never actually logged out, you'll still have cookies from that session active that send incorrect information to the server. So, while you may be able to log in and see your workspace, the server may be "confused" about who you really are.

If it's your own PC, and you have one or more other Windows Live IDs you use, say, for personal or other use as opposed to business use, login at live.com with the other(s), and then actually sign out. That will eliminate the persistent cookie issue.

As an alternative, you can go to

Tools > Internet Options > General (tab) > Browsing History > Delete... (button) > Cookies > Delete Cookies... (button)

The problem with deleting all cookies is that other websites might not work as you expected. You can also go to http://www.windowsmarketplace.com and find browser adins that will allow you to selectively delete cookies.

So far we've had three editing issues only; the first was related to ActiveX (which you already know about), the second to persistent cookies, and the third to an old version of MS Office that wasn't compatible with the system.

Hope that helps you.

I've both deleted cookies and rebooted.  Still no success.  Is there anything I can do to get my computer to ask me to run the proper Active X controls.  Thanks for your efforts so far.

You might try checking your security settings.

Tools > Internet Options > Security (tab)

You may see that your Internet Security settings are set to not allow ActiveX controls. If that's the case, and you want to maintain high security, try this:

Tools > Internet Options > Security (tab) > Trusted Sites (green check mark) > Sites (button) > Add this website to the zone:

Type in: "http://*.live.com" and press the "Add" button.

All the live.com sites will now be trusted sites. Alternatively, you may prefer to just add your workspace URL. Close the add sites dialog box, and then look down about halfway on the "Security" tab to see what settings have been enabled for the Trusted Sites zone.

If you see custom settings, you won't be able to tell from there how ActiveX has been setup in your Internet Options.

Click on the "Custom level..." button

Scroll down until you see the ActiveX section. The two you are probably most interested in are:

"Download signed ActiveX controls" and

"Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins"

Click either the "Enable" or "Prompt" radio buttons, depending on your preference and level of trust.

Hopefully, that will work for you. Good luck!

PS - I suppose I shouldn't assume it, but this will only work with Internet Explorer (or Firefox if you have installed the "IE tabs" plugin, which is really running IE inside a Firefox window, so it still only works in IE.

Re: author cannot edit his own work on another computer

OK, so now I've checked my security settings and I think I have them all squared away, although I don't think I had a problem with them in the first place.  I did try to and my http://*.live.com to my accepted websites but I can't add it.  It will only let me add websites that are secure. In other words, https://sites.

I still cannot open my workspace files on my laptop.   I can on my pc and I must say, this is a very cool and very helpful tool this workspace. It would be more helpful though if I could use it on my laptop as well.

Again, thanks for any help you can give me.

In the dialog box for adding a site to the trusted sites list you need to uncheck the box for "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone"

Re: author cannot edit his own work on another computer

Hi Steve! Have you got it working yet?

If you have author permissions in a workspace, you can save those documents to your desktop, and open and edit independently of the doc saved to the workspace -- but one of the great features of the workspace is that you can have several people collaborate on a document, and you're all working with the latest version in the workspace, not a saved copy to your desktop (version control is built into the workspace, too, but we have yet to have the opportunity to roll something back).

Did you go back in and uncheck the "Require server verification" checkbox as wdgreer pointed out? Once you've done that, you'll be able to add http sites to the list in addition to any https sites already in there.

Good luck!

Re: author cannot edit his own work on another computer

Steve, here is one more thing we didn't discuss that might be an issue for you: file format.

Is it possible that you created the document you wish to edit in Office 2007, the default format of which is a ".xlsx" file -- and then attempted to edit that default format file in an earlier version of one of the Office applications on the second computer (which would be looking for the old standby ".xls" file)?

We have multiple versions of Office around the office. I have Office 2007 on my laptop -- and I make a point of saving in "compatibility mode".

For instance an Excel 2007 file ends with ".xlsx" and to make sure it's compatible with earlier versions of Excel, you'd want to do a Save As "Excel 97-2003 workbook" -- or you'd want to make sure you download the Office compatibility pack and install it on the PC that runs the earlier version of Office (if you have one).

We hadn't experienced this editing issue, because we were making sure anyone with Office 2007 saved to the compatible file format for earlier versions. But this would be another cause of being able to preview a file in the workspace, but be unable to open and edit it on another computer.

Re: author cannot edit his own work on another computer

And finally, in my original post I noted that one of the editing problems we had was from a user who was using an incompatible version of Office -- in her case it was Office 2000. Once we upgraded her to Office 2003 with an available license, everything worked fine for her. My recollection is that Office XP, 2003 and 2007 are compatible. Here is the link (I just checked):

http://office.microsoft.com/client/helppreview.aspx?AssetID=HA102500361033&ns=OFLV20&lcid=1033#3

If for some reason that's a dynamic link to the FAQ and doesn't work, log into your workspace, click the link at the bottom of the page for "Support" and navigate to the FAQ. Add "#3" to the end of the url for the page, and then click enter (or select the third item in the list) and that will take you to the list of compatible versions of Office.

If / when you're able to figure out the cause of your problem, please be sure to post it here.

Thanks!

Re: author cannot edit his own work on another computer

Sorry to keep this post going but I still have no solution.

To recap, I have uploaded several docs to workspace.  These docs were created with Office 2003.   Excel docs and word docs.   When I first uploaded these docs, I could edit them on any computer I tried to.  However, something has changed with my laptop at home and I am no longer given the option to edit.  I can download and then open with excel or word but this is not convenient.  Any other computer I try this on works fine.  I have done everything that all of the suggestions coming from this board has told me to do and still cannot edit my docs.

Is there any comparison I can do regarding settings between my two networked computers at home.  One allows me to edit and the other doesn't.  If I knew what I was looking for I could check settings on both to see if that was a problem.

Appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Re: author cannot edit his own work on another computer

First, thanks dmcknight for the very appreciated assistance.

Some background on how the "Edit in Microsoft Office" functionality works:  The OWSSUPP.DLL is a Microsoft Office ActiveX control that is registered with Windows when you install Microsoft Office.  It's what our service uses to interact with your office client.

If you do not see the options to interact with the office client (edit, etc) it means the ActiveX control is not loading in your browser.  This can be for a number of reasons.  I would not start fiddling around with your browser settings - things should work by default without you needing to resort to this.

First, make sure you are using the latest version of your browser and that it supports ActiveX.  Then try uninstalling and reinstalling Office.  Restart the machine, log in, and see if the options appear.

Re: author cannot edit his own work on another computer

I have a few options you can try.  Stop using IE.  On the view button of IE, click page source, you'll find the problem why in the script.

Try Firefox.  In Firefox open the DOM Inspector, it will tell you where your errors lie.

Since Firefox does not support Active X how will it be helpful in this situation?

Re: author cannot edit his own work on another computer

Hello,

Maybe the problem is your office version. Office live workspace works only with 2003, XP, 2007 versions of Office for editing the document in browser.

Re: author cannot edit his own work on another computer

Hello all. Thank you all for your feedback.  My problem is solved.   I tried everything that was suggested and nothing was working.   I ended up uninstalling Office and reinstalling it.  That's all it took to correct my problem.  Don't know why, i just know that it works and I'm happy with it and I'm happy with Workspaces.  Great idea.

Again, thank you all for you help.
