No "edit" and No Office Document Capability

So I signed up for OfficeLive to test it out, and uploaded a Word document have no "edit" option. Also, I cannot create any new type of Office Document, like a Word, Excel or PowerPoint document. I can only create new Notes, List, Task List, Contact List or Event, none of which I need to do. What gives?

Do I have to install all the plug-ins in order for OfficeLive to work? I can't upload a document and edit it, or even just create a new document?

Re: No "edit" and No Office Document Capability

Hi,

The most common cause for users not seeing the "edit" option is that they are using Firefox.  Internet Explorer has the ability to connect with the Office installed on your machine and launch the appropriate app.  Firefox can't do this without using additional plugins.  We realize that many people use Firefox and we will notify the forums if a workaround is found.

Re: No "edit" and No Office Document Capability

Thank you for your response. I am using IE7, so I guess my questions is do I have to install the plug-ins so the OfficeLive, when accessed through IE, can connect with Office installed on my machine?

In other words, I can't do any more than just upload documents unless the plug-ins are installed?

Re: No "edit" and No Office Document Capability

Hi,

What version of Office are you running on your computer?  Office Live Workspace can detect if you have Office XP, Office 2003, or Office 2007 installed and will "light up" the Office integration features.  Older versions of Office are not able to integrate with OLW.

If you do have one of the above versions of Office, and still can't see the features, you might have a problem with your Office installation and running maintenance might fix it.  If you just made significant changes to Office, a reboot might also be necessary.

Please let us know how it goes.  Good luck and thanks for trying our service out!

If you have a version of office below 2003 is there a workaround to open the files?

Also, we're able to see the edit button on some computers using firefox.  Other computers can't even if it's using the same firefox version.  Do you know what could be the discrepency?

I have the same problem, and I am using Firefox.  So in view of your advice, I switched to IE and found exactly the same problem - no edit.

 Any other ideas?

Ok. My "no-edit" on IE was a result of failure to download the Active X Control.  SO corrected now.

ActiveX Control. Ah ha. OK.

Now I see the "edit" button but when I click on it, Word opens up with a message that says "Add a .NET Passport to your Windows XP user Account." Is that supposed to happen? I can't edit the document on the Web?

Re: No "edit" and No Office Document Capability

Hi,

We don't currently offer editing in the browser.  Instead, we integrate with Office so that Office can load and save files directly to your workspace.  That way, you have the benefits of a world class editor that you already know and use combined with the benefits of online sharing and collaboration.

The reason that you are getting a prompt to "Add a .NET Passport" is because Office needs to log in to our server in order to get access to the doc.  You have already logged in through the browser but windows doesn't have your credentials so it's asking for them and offering to attach your online account to your windows account so that you won't get asked again in the future.

Re: No "edit" and No Office Document Capability

Hi I have a different couple of suggestions and questions.

My main machine is a windows machine with Office Ultimate 2007. I heavily use: Outlook, Onenote, and Word

My notebook is an Apple macbook with office 2008.

I would think that your Office Live product could be a way to help these programs to work together.

Even better---changes made in Office 2007 docs, change automatically online and then editing available online.  think of it like what you did with Onenote syncing---

Re: No "edit" and No Office Document Capability

It would be helpful to have at least basic online editing.  I recently wanted to work on a document on while using a family member's computer.  They don't have a Word Processor installed and I wouldn't want to install a plug-on on their machine even if they did.

I was able to view my document in my Workspace, but obviously editing was not possible.  I agree that I would want to do most of my work from within Word., but the ability to at least enter or delete text would be useful.  I suppose you could get into feature creep, so when would enough be enough.
