Important: Disable the "Edit" icon in OLW, when document is being edited in Microsoft Office application.

Before you begin

  1. Login to Microsoft Office Live Workspace
  2. Click on the Workspace on the left pane, to view the list of all the documents.

Scenario

Imagine that you have clicked a Microsoft Excel document to view in the preview mode. Then, you clicked the Edit icon on the Menu. Now this document is opened  in Microsoft Excel on the desktop.

Suggestion

Once the document is opened using the Microsoft Excel, the Edit icon in the Microsoft Office Live Workspace should be disabled. Otherwise, the user would not know whether the document that is being edited belongs Workspace live or a file from the local machine. and would keep clickin the Edit icon.

Note: The Microsoft Excel Window title just displays the file name only.

Important: Assuming that the user has not clicked the File menu of the application, to know the filename path.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the Edit menu in the Office Live Workspace is not disabled, then the following dialog box will appear, when the icon is clicked:

Dialogbox message:

Dialog box title: Microsoft Internet Explorer

Message: Some files can harm your computer. If the file information looks suspicious or you do not fully trust the source, do not open the file.
You are opening the following file:
file name: syllabus.doc
from: challaprabhu.workspace.officelive.com

Hi,

I am trying to open a PPT file I previously uploaded on my workspace, but when I click on the edit icon the message you quote above appears::

Dialog box title: Microsoft Internet Explorer

Message: Some files can harm your computer. If the file information looks suspicious or you do not fully trust the source, do not open the file.
You are opening the following file:
file name: syllabus.doc
from: challaprabhu.workspace.officelive.com

When I click yes PPT opens, but it gives me a message saying:

PowerPoint can't read http://..........

Any why this happens?

Thanks, Alessio

Re: Important: Disable the "Edit" icon in OLW, when document is being edited in Microsoft Office application.

Hi Challa, Can you help me with a similar problem? I am unable to edit a powerpoint presentation. I have tried one of two options: (1) I have opened power point 2003 (with workspace add on feature), log onto shared PPT document and failed repeatedly to load document. (2) I have loged onto OLW and opened the read only preview. I clicked on the ppt edit icon and the following message pops up:

"The document cannot be opened. Use the Save As button on the toolbar to save the document to your desktop."

I have saved the ppt presentation as directed. It is saved a Zip file. I have extracted the file as jumbled mess and still unable to open the presentation.

Hope you can help,
frustrated, Reg
